Termite Inspection & Treatment
Termites are unfortunately common and devastatingly destructive. Thousands of homes and businesses each year are affected by these pests. They look similar to small white worms with legs like an ant. Young, reproducing termites look like winged ants flying to look for mates in humid weather.
How To Tell If You Have Termites
Termites are most commonly found in flooring, skirting, and doorframes. They eat the timber and hollow it out, sometimes causing it to appear bubbled or wrinkled. You may also notice that the flooring feels soft under your feet or you are easily able to break through it with a heavy object like a vacuum cleaner.
Other signs of termites include seeing many young reproductive age termites called alates. During warmer months they leave their nests in the evenings to find mates. If you notice large numbers of what appear to be flying ants, this could be a sign of termites.
You might also notice the termite’s tunnels. To travel safely, they build tunnels to their nest with mud and cellulose. They look like small brown straws in the walls or timber.
How To Prevent Termites
- Remove loose timber in and around the home
- Replace timber with other non-susceptible materials
- Keep garden beds below weep holes and vents to prevent entry
- Keep vents clear to allow ventilation underneath your building
- Fix any leaky pipes or drains as soon as possible
- Receive regular termite inspections and treat infestations quickly
