Stored Product Pests
Also known as “pantry pests,” stored product pests are among the most common types of pests that you may encounter. They encounter stored dried foods in your home or business such as cereal, flour, dried beans, nuts, rice, dried fruit, or cured meats.
They may also infest other stored non-food products such as bird feed, potpourri, pet food, or dried flowers. Unsealed or open food is most likely to be infected, but these pests can also chew through packaging to access the food. They may chew through cereal boxes or crawl through seams that are not properly sealed.
The first sign of a stored product pest infestation is seeing pests in your products. You will likely find small beetles in susceptible foods or see them in cupboards. Another indication could be moths flying around the kitchen or see larvae in corners.
How To Prevent Bugs In Stored Food
Nothing wrecks an appetite faster than bugs in your food! To prevent this, thoroughly inspect all new stored food items before opening them or placing them in your pantry. Check that the seams of boxes are intact and that any bags have not been punctured.
Once you open food items, make sure they are tightly resealed. Press the air out of bags before closing or transfer the product into an airtight container. Clean up spills as soon as possible and regularly clean out kitchen cupboards or pantry shelves.
