Spiders
Australia is home to a number of different spider species, each with different living habits and needs for treatment. Though many spiders prefer the more humid outdoors where insects are plentiful, some have found indoor environments quite attractive. They enjoy dark spaces and the shelter that homes and businesses provide.
Common Spiders Found in Victoria
Red Back Spider
Also known as the Australian Black Widow, the Red Back Spider is a highly venomous spider identifiable by the prominent red stripe on her otherwise black abdomen. These spiders are mainly nocturnal and prefer to live in warm, dry locations in or near human residences.
White Tail Spider
As their name suggests, White Tail spiders are identifiable by the white tip of their abdomen. They live in gardens and houses, hiding under things like bark, rocks, and clothes, or in shoes. They are most active at night, hunting other spiders as prey rather than building nests to catch them.
Black House Spider
Black House spiders have a light grey abdomen with dark brown to black legs. Females tend to be larger but males have larger legs in relation to their bodies. When inside, they are often found in corners or around windows and doorways. Though they are venomous, they are not considered particularly dangerous because they bite so infrequently.
Huntsman Spider
The Huntsman spider’s body is shades of brown or grey and the species is often identified by its legs which are long and bent similarly to a crab. Humans often find them in garages, sheds, and other places that remain undisturbed. They can behave aggressively when provoked but bites usually do not require hospitalisation.
Wolf Spider
Wolf spiders have bodies that tend to camouflage them with their environment. However, they can be identified by the two prominent eyes that reflect light. Males are often found inside during autumn when they are looking for mates. Wolf spiders may be beneficial on farms and in gardens for controlling other pests.
Trapdoor Spider
Brown trapdoor spiders are chocolate brown in colour. They dig open burrows in the ground where they spend most of their time. Males may be found more often during humid weather while they look for a mate. These spiders are usually shy and reserved.
Orb-Weaving Spider
Orb-weaving spiders are typically reddish brown to grey in colour. They build large vertical webs to catch prey, usually in between trees or shrubs. They are reluctant to bite and bites tend to be mild if they do occur.
How to Prevent Spiders in Your Home
The best way to prevent spiders in your home is to minimise the environments they are attracted to. Keep clothes, toys, etc. off the floor so they cannot burrow in. Frequently vacuum and clean dark areas or rooms you don’t use often.
Remove webs whenever you find them and make sure your home is properly insulated. Patch any holes in the walls or baseboards that may be letting insects in.
