Fabric & Textile Pests

Fabric and textile pests are especially frustrating due to the damage they create. They infest fabric and paper products like clothes, wool, blankets, carpets, and curtains. The three most common types of fabric and textile pests are silverfish, carpet beetles, and clothes moths.

Silverfish

Silverfish are long wingless insects deriving their name from their silvery light grey colour and fish-like movements. They prefer dark, humid places and are commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, wall crevices, or cupboards.

You’ll likely know you have silverfish by finding one in a sink or bathtub. You may also notice holes in your clothing

Carpet Beetle

Carpet beetles are very small, round insects, usually dark brown to black in colour. They prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as wall cavities, roof voids, or in upholstered furniture. Though the adult beetles eat pollen, the larvae feed on animal products like silk, wool, fur, or leather.

The beetles may enter buildings through windows, doors, or cracks in the foundation. They could also be carried in on fresh flowers or plants. You’ll notice damage to clothes or furniture as an indication of a beetle infestation.

Clothes Moth

The clothes moths you are most likely to see are males, as they are stronger flyers. These moths are brown to yellowish in colour with a long skinny body and two wings. Unlike other moths, the clothes moth prefers darkness and will nest in places like closets or drawers.

They consume wool, fur, silk, and hair and can damage entire wardrobes, furniture or blankets. You’ll likely notice holes in these fabrics or may see moths flying away when disturbed or exposed to light.

How To Prevent Moths And Other Fabric Pests

Each fabric and textile pest is unique but simple steps can help prevent all three.

  • Keep your closet well ventilated. Air it out frequently and move things around
  • Store clothes or fabrics in airtight containers
  • Brush out wool and fur after wearing them outside
  • Keep storage areas dry and clean
