Borers
Borers are small insects that resemble beetles. They infest and damage timber in and around buildings. The larvae of the species feed on the starches in timber, causing holes and structural damage.
One of the first signs of a borer infestation will be small holes in the timber. This is where the adult borer has exited the wood after laying eggs. You may notice these in wooden furniture, structural timber, or even flooring.
There are two main types of borers, each with distinctive behaviors.
- Common Furniture Beetle
- Attacks furniture, structural timber, and decorative woodwork
- Prefers old, well-seasoned timber like Baltic Pine or New Zealand White Pine
- Prefers cool, humid conditions
- Powder Post Borer
- Attacks the sapwood of hardwood timbers
- Produces a fine, powdery dust similar to talcum powder
- Causes severe damage to woods with high sapwood content
How To Get Rid Of Borers
Treating borer infestations requires an acidic treatment designed to kill the beetles without damaging the timber any further. Our team will treat all infested areas with a boric acid treatment that kills the adult beetles before they can mate and reproduce.
Help prevent borer infestation by keeping timber dry and in a non-humid environment. Seal any cracks or crevices that may provide an entryway. Treat any infestation as soon as possible to prevent severe structural damage.
