Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs are small, wingless insects that range from rusty brown to a deeper reddish-brown colour. They are a discreet species that likes to hide in dark locations, often near where people sleep. They are attracted to the warmth and carbon dioxide that we give off in our sleep.
Bed bugs can occur anywhere humans gather, including schools, homes, hotels, and offices. They travel quite easily and can be transported in luggage or on clothes. You’ll find them in mattresses, floorboards, bed frames, bedding, carpets, and in crevices of walls. However, they’re often difficult to detect.
Bed Bugs prefer cooler temperatures. An adult bed bug can survive up to 6 months in 20C, but longer in colder temps. They feed at night by biting humans and sucking our blood.
How To Tell If You Have Bed Bugs
One of the first signs of bed bugs you’ll notice is the bites. You may wake up with small, red, itchy bumps on your body. That will be your first clue to investigate.
Though they are small, there are signs of bed bugs in your bed if you look for them. You may see small blood stains on the sheets or droppings along the edge and seams of the mattress. Bed bugs shed and cast their skins which you may also see. Severe infestations may even create a sickly sweet smell near the bed.
How To Treat Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs are a tough pest to treat and they are not eliminated easily. It often involves the work of a professional.
Since bed bugs like cool temperatures, one of the best ways to kill them is with heat. Our team will treat the infested room with intense heat for a 24 hour period to eliminate the bugs. Then we’ll remove the pests from mattresses, carpets, and anything else they have infested.
For bedding and other linens, wash them in hot water and dry on the hottest setting. If things cannot be washed or dried in heat, you may need to replace them entirely.
Prevent bed bugs by keeping the bed and surrounding area clean. Seal cracks and holes that allow them inside. Check regularly and respond quickly if you notice an infestation.
